It will run from  September 5 through December 23. Norman Sandfield will be leading a gallery walk.

Sandfield. After just a quick look over it I am very excited. It will take me a little time to really grasp all that is in it but from the stats section (in Appendix I) there are 2,256 books on netsuke and 1,501 auction catalogs from 72 auction houses. Thats just the tip of the ice berg, I’ll post a more useful review in the books section when I have more time in and around the book.

It was a welcome addition to my growing library for two reasons first, it is a book on a very narrow field of antiques this is almost always a requirement for me to buy a book. The second major reason is the author, that man is incredible. In the intro he mentions he spent over a hundred hours talking inro with Ruysen Yamaguchi (Japanese Lacqure-er ). In addition to many other inro dealers and experts. Amazing stuff. The book is basically a divided up into 19 main chapters each about some aspect of inro, such as metal inlays or pearl-shell inlays. In each chapter that are a number of great inro to illustrate each point. I should ad that this book is dense and thus not for the faint of heart. I’ll come back to this when I have read the book and have a more sophisticated understanding.
